“After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.” (John 19:28-30)
When our Lord tasted the vinegar, He said, “It is finished!”. According, to the Greek, the word tetelestai, means, “it is accomplished”, “it is fulfilled”, or “it is paid in full”. Jesus’ death accomplished redemption— paid on our behalf the penalty that comes from sin, removed our guilt, rejection, sickness and poverty, all was “paid in full”; and His death fulfilled all the Old Testament prophecies.
The Old Testament pointed to the coming of Christ and recorded all the promises of God to His people. The people of the Old Testament looked forward to the coming of Christ and to the fulfillment of the promises of God, but we the people of the New Testament are not waiting for the promises to be fulfilled, we look back to the cross and see how all the promises of God were fulfilled through the finished work of Christ. This is what it means to live in the present-day truth. When Jesus said, “it is finished” it meant everything is paid for and marked the end of the waiting period. Now we have all things. Whatever we need and whatever we will ever need is already given to us in Christ. It is now time to enjoy every good thing in us in Christ Jesus.
Philemon 1:6 says; “That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus”. Jesus is Lord!
PRAY WITH ME
My Lord Jesus,
Thank You for Your final and ultimate sacrifice for my sin. With Your death, the complex sacrificial system ended because You took all sin upon Yourself. Now I can freely approach the Father because of what You did for me. I believe in Your sacrificial death and resurrection; I therefore escaped the penalty that comes from sin. I live eternally with God. I have received everything that was promised in the old covenant. I am blessed with every spiritual blessing. Every good thing is in me because am in You. Thank You Jesus!
